Hillsborough

Hillsborough is part of the Orange County School District, which is comprised of seven elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools that serve approximately 6,200 students. The district’s two award winning high schools help prepare students for collegiate life and with a plethora of higher learning institutions situated within 30 miles of Hillsborough it is easy to see why education is such a focus for town residents. Universities such as Wake Forest, Clemson, Duke and North Carolina State are all located within a forty minute drive of downtown Hillsborough while the famed grounds of North Carolina await eager minds in neighboring Chapel Hill. Proximity to these universities affords residents much more than the opportunity to pursue education beyond high school. The presence of these institutions and their impact on surrounding communities is far reaching in that they provide attractive employment opportunities and first class entertainment for the local population to enjoy.

Each school has an impressive performing arts center that features both school-funded shows as well as high profile touring acts such as Broadway musicals, famous comedians and live concerts. Additionally, each school is renowned for their athletic programs with teams competing at the highest levels of collegiate sports. North Carolina’s men’s basketball team is the defending NCAA national champion. Duke’s basketball team last won a national title in 2002. These schools, as well as the many community colleges, technical schools and professional training centers serve to enhance the cities and town’s they are centered in and by doing so, effect the daily lives of the many citizens that call these towns home.

Hillsborough has a very rich history and its role in defining North Carolina’s heritage is deeply rooted. During the colonial and revolutionary period, Hillsborough was a hub for political activity. Several royal and elected governors lived here, as did signer of the Declaration of Independence, William Hooper, whose house still stands today. The War of Regulation (1776-1771) ended here. Additionally, the town hosted the third Provincial Congress in 1775, the state’s constitutional convention in 1778, and five general assemblies from 1778 to 1784. Famous generals who played significant roles in local politics and demonstrated courage and leadership during critical wartimes include General’s Cornwallis and Sherman.

Today, Hillsborough is still a center for politics. However, the town’s quiet neighborhoods, expansive parklands, attractive housing, fine schools and safe streets are the reasons why so many seek to call Hillsborough home. While Hillsborough’s historic sites and unique shops make this town a wonderful place to visit, locals will say it is an even better in which to live work and play. Flanked by two lakes on each side of town, flowing streams in the hillsides, lush foliage, trees throughout and gently rolling terrain, Hillsborough’s natural beauty is as welcoming as the friendly neighbors one will find in each of the town’s subdivisions. So, if you are looking for a new home in the north central part of North Carolina, consider the town of Hillsborough and discover for yourself a better way to live.
